Recommended Vitamins for Healthy Mini Pigs: A Simple Supplement Guide

If you're a proud owner of a pet pig, you know they're intelligent, affectionate companions. But unlike their outdoor counterparts who forage and graze on varied diets, indoor pigs can miss out on essential nutrients.  That's where supplements come in!

As a fellow mini pig owner (and budget-conscious one at that!), I've found that three key supplements can make a world of difference in keeping your house pigs healthy and happy:

1. Fish Oil: The Joint and Heart Helper

Fish oil is a powerhouse of omega-3 fatty acids, crucial for supporting joint health, reducing inflammation, boosting the immune system, and even promoting healthy skin and coat.

  • Dosage: 100-150mg EPA/DHA per 10 lbs of body weight daily for healthy pigs, or up to 300mg for those with health / skin issues.

  • Tip: Look for pure fish oil with minimal added ingredients. Introduce it slowly to avoid tummy upsets.

2. Vitamin E: The Essential Antioxidant

Vitamin E is a must-have for any pig's diet. It protects cells from damage, supports immune function, and works together with selenium (another essential nutrient) to prevent serious health problems.

  • Dosage: One 400 IU capsule per day is usually sufficient.

  • Note: Even pig food with added vitamin E can degrade over time, so supplementing is key.

3. Selenium: The Immune Booster

Selenium plays a vital role in immune function, thyroid health, and reproduction. It's often added to pig food, but additional supplementation is recommended for house pigs.

  • Dosage: 150-300mcg ONCE A WEEK (consult your vet for specific guidance).

  • Caution: Selenium can be toxic in high doses, so don't overdo it!

Why These Three?

I've found this combination to be affordable, effective, and easy to administer. It covers the most common deficiencies seen in house pigs and provides a solid foundation for overall health.

Remember:

  • Consult your veterinarian before starting any new supplements for your pig.

  • Always introduce supplements gradually to avoid digestive upset.

  • Choose high-quality supplements with minimal added ingredients.

  • Monitor your pig for any changes and adjust dosages as needed.

By providing these key vitamins, you'll help your indoor pig thrive and enjoy a long, healthy life by your side.
